2013 Diwali Program

With the onset of winter, mixed color of leaves turned more beautiful with the last celebration of Diwali in Houston-Galveston area by Houston Maharashtra Mandal (HMM). Diwali Dhamal was celebrated on Saturday Nov 23, 2013 at Cross Point Church, Katy.

This Celebration of triumph of knowledge over darkness was started by Kathak dance of Manjusha Jadhav on Ganesh Vandana. Tabla performance by Amit Bhagwat and singing program under Ambrish and Jay Prabhukhot’s direction were mesmerizing.

Chief guest Avinash Bhome inaugurated ‘Sneha Magazine’. He also presented comedy instances from life of Acharya Atre.

Indian psychology of raising kids to achieve only ‘A-grade’ and side-effect of this thinking was successfully presented in Teenage Skit. Writer and director of the skit, Mihir Kulkarni is a teen ager and was able to put his message effectively.

No celebration completes without dance, so is true with Diwali Dhamal. People could not stop themselves joining Bollywood Dance Medley – old era to new ear. ‘Radha on the dance floor’, swiped the stage off. To connect the new buds of this generation to their culture, Marathi school was started on dussera by Vaishali Khandekar and Kanchan Akolkar. Details of this school were very useful for the community. At the end floor was opened to audience for Bollywood dance. ‘Sheela ki jawani’ and ‘Om shanti on’ were among rocking numbers. Akshay Deshpande emceed the whole program. At this last event of the year, HMM President Sharmila Moharir presented vote of thanks to all committee members and appealed Marathi community to come forward and join hands to build a place of worship of their own. She said, she is looking forward to build HMM’s own temple and community hall for future events and is very positive for collecting big donations from the community for this mega project. - by Roopali Shishulkar
