About Houston Maharashtra Mandal (HMM)

The Houston Maharashtra Mandal (HMM) is a group formed by Marathi speaking people of Maharashtra, India now residing in Houston, Texas. HMM was organized as a non-profit organization under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act of September 2, 1980. HMM was established in 1976. At that time there were approximately 60 Maharashtrian families living in Houston. They successfully celebrated festivals such as Sankrant, Gudhi Padwa, Ganeshotsav, and Diwali. As the number of families started increasing, the Mandal organized several cultural, musical, and sports events. HMM members organized one/three act plays and other musical events/plays which were received very well by attendees. Some of these events were later organized outside Houston and some were later organized outside U.S.

HMM has successfully organized many fundraising and community service activities. One of the biggest achievements of HMM was to host the BMM Convention in 1995. Approximately 2,700 Maharashtrian families in U.S. and Canada attended this convention.

HMM has obtained media recognition through Houston's local media and even Marathi news channels in India. In the past few years the Mandal has added activities that touched other communities such as the tree plantation event for the City of Houston and HMM Kashmir Floods Fundraiser. This year HMM obtained prestigious Congressional recognition through Honorable Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee at the 2014 Ganeshotsav celebration.

Last year HMM started Marathi Shala in Cypress, Katy, and Sugar Land. Today we have about 700 Maharashtrian families living in Houston. This year 750+ people attended Ganeshothsav celebration. We do feel a need for having our own Vastu (i.e. home/meeting place) for Marathi people in Houston. HMM has already started taking steps in that direction.

HMM needs volunteers on an ongoing basis. People interested in volunteering for HMM activities are requested to contact any of the HMM Board members. All members are urged to lend a helping hand so we can come up with quality programs and have fun together. Members who have paid their membership dues earlier but have not had the opportunity to send us the membership form are requested to create an online account, using the 'Become a member' section!

The purpose of this is to have a method for updating records annually to make sure that your contact details are correct and you don't miss out any of our correspondence. For all activities your event fee check is considered to be your RSVP.
